End of the year Superintendent update.

June 17, 2021

Dear Coos Bay School District Families,

The end of the 2020-21 school year is upon us. This has been a very unique school year and we have been able to get through it with the hard work and dedication of our staff, families, community, and kids.

As this year closes, our district is looking ahead to the 2021-22 school year. We are planning for a full-time in person school year beginning in the fall. We will go back to a very similar schedule and calendar as we had prior to the closure in Spring 2020. At this time, we do not know what the public health requirements will be, but I will be communicating those as we get them. We will also be offering an online program for those families and students who are wanting that option.

We have a few programs going on this summer. Sunset and Millicoma are hosting some enrichment programs. MHS and Destinations will offer credit recovery. Eastside and Madison are hosting K-2 Jump Start in August. We will not be offering summer school for Junior High level this summer, as we will be in the middle of moving classrooms and teachers to the brand-new building for next fall.

The Coos Bay School district will be utilizing federal emergency funding next year to keep our class sizes and intervention groups small so we can work on recovery learning. Our hope is that summer school funding will continue into next summer and we will have ample time to plan more exciting and robust programs. If you have questions about summer learning opportunities at your school, please contact the school for more information.

Thank you everyone for all you have done to support our students through this past year. Have a great summer and I hope you get an opportunity to rest and recharge. I will keep everyone up to date on information as I get it throughout the summer.
