Important Update Regarding our Inter-District Transfer Process

Posted Date: 06/09/26 (01:45 PM)

Dear Coos County Community,

As we prepare for the upcoming 2026-27 school year, we want to share an important update regarding our Inter-District Transfer (IDT) process.

To ensure we maintain optimal class sizes and provide the best possible learning environments for our students, the Coos Bay School District Board has formally adopted our open enrollment capacities for the next school year. These official figures have been posted directly to our website for your review.

Because enrollment varies significantly by grade and school, we will be handling applications in two different ways depending on current space availability:

  • Open Grade Levels (Processed Immediately): For grade levels and schools that currently have plenty of room, we will accept and process new IDT applications on a rolling basis as they are received.

  • Closed/Limited Grade Levels (Waitlisted until August): Due to current enrollment numbers and space constraints, a number of grade levels and schools cannot accept new transfers at this time. Applications for these impacted grades will be automatically placed on a waitlist, and families will receive an official notification regarding their waitlist status.

Our plan for handling the waitlisted applications moving forward includes:

  • Reassessment in August: We will closely monitor enrollment fluctuations throughout the summer. In August, we will reassess our numbers to see if any capacity has opened up in the currently closed grade levels or schools.

  • Priority & Lottery Process: If any slots do become available following our August review, they will first be filled by students who qualify for priority preference as defined by district policy (such as siblings of current students). If any available seats remain after priority placements are made, the district will utilize an equitable lottery process to randomly select from the remaining waitlisted families.

    • Lottery Selection Tool: To guarantee absolute fairness and transparency, if a lottery becomes necessary, the district will utilize a secure digital tool to randomly select students from the remaining waitlist. This automated system ensures that every applicant has an equal opportunity for placement.

We appreciate your understanding and patience as we work to balance our classrooms equitably and responsibly. Please visit our website to view the adopted numbers, and feel free to reach out to the District Office if you have any questions regarding the application timeline.
